Aluminium: a greener choice

Our packaging doesn’t just look good – we’re committed to ensuring our products are better for the planet, inside and out. That’s why we made the choice to use aluminium bottles.

Caring for cherished places and making products that are healing not harmful are intrinsic to our way of working. When developing Sop, founder Fiona Burrage realised that a cruelty-free and vegan range wasn’t enough. The packaging had to live up to the high standards of its contents.

‘We went through a rigorous and involved research process to decide what to use to package our products,’ she said. ‘Obviously, it needed to be fit for purpose. But beyond that I was adamant that recyclability and reusability should take priority, and that we could be proud of the materials we used.’ Here are some of the reasons why:

Lightly does it

Aluminium is lightweight. As a comparison, a 500-millilitre glass bottle weighs around 400 grams, while an aluminium one weighs only 10 grams. That difference means less wear and tear to machinery, more efficient shipping and distribution, and lower carbon emissions from transporting our products to customers.

Infinitely recyclable

Unlike plastic, which can only be recycled a couple of times, aluminium can be recycled indefinitely. Once a Sop product has been used, the packaging can be melted down and reformed without losing any quality and using far less energy than other recycling methods. This also saves 95 percent of the energy required to make metal from scratch with raw materials.

Hardwearing and reusable

Aluminium is corrosive-resistant, which is why it’s the non-ferrous metal of choice for satellites and airplanes. It also makes it ideal for use in the bathroom, where water and heat might warp or discolour other materials. And it’s reusable too – simply rinse out and refill with something else.

Landfill life cycle

While we encourage our customers to recycle, if aluminium does end up in landfill, it takes a lot less time to decompose than glass and is significantly less damaging to the environment that plastic.

Looking good

Bathed in light on the bathroom shelf, our bottles look beautiful. Their polished glint and simple forms are tactile and timeless. The perfect pairing for our evocative scents inspired by nature.

Choosing aluminium packaging is just one of the ways we’re doing our part to protect the planet for future generations. From our supply chain to our local ties, we’re committed to making eco-friendly and ethical choices, like supporting the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
